Surviving and Thriving: 12 Lessons from My Journey with Blood Cancer

September is Blood Cancer Awareness Month, and what better way to celebrate than to share 12 lessons I learned from having Multiple Myeloma, a rare form of blood cancer. These lessons have also helped me navigate other challenges in life.

I hope they can help you too.

— LESSON 1 —

Do your research.

Find out all there is to know about your illness, treatment options, and the best specialists and hospitals in that field. Always get a second opinion. I can't express this enough: not all doctors and treatments are the same. What works for one person may not be suitable for you. Remember, there are both good and bad professionals in the medical field.

— LESSON 2 —

You're worth the distance.

Don't hesitate to seek the best doctor or hospital just because it's far away. In the long run, you won't remember the time it took to get there; you'll only remember the extra time you gained in your life.

— LESSON 3 —

Never expect anything from anyone...

...and you won't be disappointed. Others may not fully understand what you're going through.

— LESSON 4 —

Don't stop doing what you love.

If you stop doing what you love, then the cancer has won. It’s as simple as that. Don’t give up!

— LESSON 5 —

Keep a sense of humor and stay positive.

Your mind has a powerful influence over your body.

— LESSON 6 —

If someone offers to help you, let them.

—even if you don't feel like accepting. They may genuinely need to help. Besides, if you keep saying no, people may eventually stop offering.

— LESSON 7 —

Don’t be a martyr.

Everyone is going through something. No one wants to be around a "Debbie Downer."

— LESSON 8 —

Fuel your body.

Indulge in comfort foods, but remember that food is fuel for your body. Be mindful to put quality fuel into your system so it runs well. This includes staying well-hydrated—drink water!

— LESSON 9 —

Engage your body & your mind.

Exercise your body and mind. Both need to be engaged, even if it’s just a walk to the mailbox or reading the junk mail. You have to use it so you don't lose it!

— LESSON 10 —

Sleep.

Your body and mind need rest; they’re going through a lot.

— LESSON 11 —

Say "Yes".

Say yes to every opportunity that comes your way, but learn how to say no to those who expect too much from you.

— LESSON 12 —

Treat yourself well.

Whether it’s getting a massage, buying a new outfit, or stopping for flowers on your way home from the doctor, you deserve it!

I hope these 12 lessons can help you or someone you know who is going through a tough time. Remember, it's up to you to make the best of your situation.

You have the power to make yourself happy.
